Last weekend, I had the honour of speaking at a conference in Sydney for the ever so fabulous Shauna Ryan, Founder of Project Strong Woman. WOW! What a day! Honestly, as conferences go, this one was really connective. It had such a beautiful community feel to it, a safe place to learn from others and take on board some really beautiful and encouraging lessons.
There was so much inspiration throughout the course of the day, and I wanted to share with you all some highlights for me.
A beautiful woman by the name of Yvonne Hypolite spoke to us about ‘body’ self love. She nailed it! Yvonne highlighted that we are not to be obsessively focussed on our outside appearance but spend more time creating our perfect ‘insides’. We MUST believe that we are worthy and can do anything! She spoke of her grandmother who embarked on studying at the age of 70! Proving that we can be all we want to be. It was so uplifting. One phrase that Yvonne shared really resonated with me…
She said “There is nothing external in your life that has power over you, unless you allow it“… For me, this means that I should not let the behaviour of others affect my own thoughts and well-being. Something I’m sure we have all experienced..
Next up was me! It was my task to speak about the power of the mind and self love. I wanted to prove that self love can be achieved, even when it is in your 30’s, 40’s and so on. I grew with very little self love as a child but the experience of losing my mother to cancer in 2008 shook my foundations and forced me to re-build and be proud. I believe that self love can only be maintained if we respect ourselves enough to provide what we need. I shared some tips that I swear by that keep my positivity levels up, my gratitude in check and my love for myself strong.
We then heard from Emily Rex. She is a pure delight. Emily spoke of her experience in the music industry and the ongoing knock backs that can really test your self belief but reinforced that music was her ‘voice’ and the only way that she knows how to be outwardly and clearly expressive and that it means the world to her, therefore, no matter what comes her way, she made a promise to herself to keep chasing her music goals and believe that she will conquer her dreams. So uplifting! And we were treated to a song from Emily which was such an honour..
The day wrapped up with Azure Antoinette, a powerful speaker/poet from LA. Azure has been labelled ‘the Maya Angelou of the Millennial generation‘.. I can see why after listening to her talk. She had the room captivated with her humerous way of sharing that no matter what we face, we must not give up on our goals. Azure has lived a life of mundane work, doing what others thought she should do but then just one day, shut the door on all of that and pursued what was really in her heart. From there a series of events, including a chance meeting with Oprah Winfrey, literally catapulted her onto the path she dreamed of. She is a testament to the fact that if we are passionate enough about what we want, we can and will achieve it!
I walked away feeling very inspired. Women coming together to support one another on this crazy journey is just so damn lovely and I think important in order to continue to push ourselves and each other to decide to choose what is best for us. We really do deserve to come first as for the most part we spend a lot of our time pleasing others. Oh, and have I mentioned the cupcakes yet…? #ohmygoDDDDDD!
The main lesson I took from yesterday was that life is precious and worthy of fighting for. Your dreams are worth fighting for and we are not to waste any more time worrying about silly things that don’t matter and start focusing on what does! Even if we think that what we are chasing after is just too huge to attain, we must at least try! Remember the grandmother who studied at the age of 70…? Yeah, that!
Special mention to the girls from ‘Choose Real‘ who were also in attendance. We heard from Ruth Lewis-Jones, Founder and advocate for young girls and women, inspiring and empowering them to believe in their self-worth. Stay tuned, we will share more about them soon!
Self Love. It’s a powerful thing. It’s a worthy attribute. And it is entirely your choice! X
