“..’Magnetic‘ happens when you own who you are. And all the things that make you… YOU! You don’t dis-count the person you are… Even when you are still trying to figure that out..” Meet Sophie Higgins, woman of much wisdom AND Founder and Designer of Knicker Luxe, divine Australian cotton underwear company celebrating everything that makes every woman feel free to be her fabulous self! We came across the Knicker Luxe ‘Magnetic Collection‘ whilst scrolling through Insta and adored the story behind this beautiful all girl brand!
When I love what I see, we MUST share it with you all! I think Sophie is all kinds of FABULOUS and am so excited to share this interview with you, and her simply LOVELY Knickers!
Leigh: Can you tell us how Knicker Luxe was born?
Sophie Higgins: I’d been working in retail and underwear for a number of years before I created Knicker Luxe and it really was an instinctive response to something that I felt was missing in the market. I didn’t want to create just another underwear brand. I wanted to create something that was inclusive and meaningful and that promoted my genuine belief that the best version of ourselves is found when we honour our true self, whoever she is.
I think that also, as women, we tend to gravitate towards natural fibers. Cotton is comfortable, it breathes, it’s easy to wear but it also has a reputation for being basic and boring! So I wanted to challenge some of those assumptions while revamping what cotton can be and our luxury Pima cotton is key to what makes us unique in the market. I love creating cotton lingerie collections that manage to be modern and pretty while still respecting that everyday love for cotton that we all have.
LV: Why is it so important to you that women wear nice underwear?
SH: Underwear is a personal thing, it’s the closest thing against our skin and it’s a way to show self-care in a very intimate, effortless way! I think we spend a lot of time on how we look on the outside but there’s a special something, a certain feeling you get, knowing that you’re wearing something against your skin that is beautiful and comfortable and luxe – something just for you – it’s a great feeling.
LV: I am a 40-year old mother of 4. I have saggy bits, dimples where they shouldn’t be and extra padding in areas I wish I could get rid of, plus I am very used to spending money on my family and not me! How would you sell your product to someone like me?
SH: Well first I’d tell you that I’m not trying to sell you a product, because I’m not. Knicker Luxe isn’t just a product to us – it’s a space where, as women, we can come together to celebrate our differences and share all those things we have in common. We value individuality and that sense of personal liberation that comes from embracing all the things that make us unique, which includes the saggy bits! And it’s also about remembering that despite the many different roles we women have, every once in a while it’s important to put ourselves first and nurture the woman within. And what better way to do this than by putting something beautiful close against our skin. And that’s what Knicker Luxe does – it offers a range of knickers that flatter across age and style and size, knickers that are beautiful and luxe and so seriously comfortable that they just let you be you. They don’t try and dress you up or down to be something you aren’t. And if this is something that resonates with you then we’d love for you to enjoy our knickers.
LV: Your range caters for women of all shapes and sizes (hallelujah!!!). Was this option important to you? Why?
SH: Absolutely! We are women first and foremost, and we choose not to identify ourselves by our shape, size or age – it’s not very creative and it’s also not relevant to what we as a brand are about. We’re all women and we all want great knickers, it’s as simple as that.
LV: Each style of Knicker has a name! Why so?
SH: At Knicker Luxe we’re women who celebrate women and we think of our cotton knickers as our girls and so, with this in mind, we wanted to give each style a name to reflect the personality we felt they embodied. They aren’t named after women that I know but there’s been a few requests, so we’ll see!
LV: Where can we find your range to purchase?
SH: We’re currently online and in a number of boutiques across North America. But watch this space!
LV: Where do you hope to see yourself in 5 years?
SH: A little less restless! But still as passionate about retailing to women as I am now. I’d love to experience motherhood and enjoy the challenges of balancing that with a successful business.
LV: Who inspires you and why?
SH: There’s not any one person that comes to mind. I think that lots of people can inspire me along the way. The thing that they all have in common is that true sense of solidarity in themselves. People who do their own thing and don’t run with the pack. A person who knows who they are, to me, has a certain charm and charisma and they remind me to keep nurturing my own spark. I’m always in awe of someone with a quiet confidence about them.
